Applesauce brownie squares

  • ½ cup butter, or margarine
  • Two ounces unsweetened chocolate squares
  • ¾ cup brown or granulated sugar
  • Two eggs, beaten
  • ¾ cup applesauce
  • one teaspoon vanilla
  • one cup whole-wheat pastry flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Chocolate nut topping
  • Two tablespoons sugar
  • ¼ cup chopped nuts
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate pieces

Place butter and chocolate in a medium saucepan. Melt over low heat. When the mixture is cool to the touch, add sugar, eggs, applesauce, and vanilla. Beat well. Next, stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Next, combine flour mixture and chocolate mixture. Beat well until just combined. Then, pour batter into a prepared 8-inch square baking pan. Combine topping ingredients. Sprinkle over dough (don’t go overboard with the topping). Bake the mixture in a 350 degrees Fahrenheit oven for 30-35 minutes or when a toothpick which you have inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the brownie to cool completely in the baking pan before cutting it into squares or rectangles.
